About

I have held myself back from gypsy wanderlust for as long as I can bear.  My daughter says she remembers me talking about a cross country trip when she was in high school – and that’s been a while.  (Probably longer than even she cares to admit…)

So, when the year turns, I’m planning to light out for the territories.  My goal is to be gone for at least two months – and to travel mostly on what William Least Heat Moon referred to as “blue highways” – the lines on his map that represent the two lane roads through the small towns and forgotten parts of the country.

When I’m not on the road, I live in an old house built in 1842 in Deer Isle, Maine where I design websites, make jewelry from precious metals and found objects, and paint with encaustics.  The web design pays the bills, and the other stuff feeds my soul.

MAX – daring travel companion – is a sweet standard poodle puppy who shares my love of life, and has his own great sense of humor and adventure.

Max, at three months, was pretty irresistible.

I’ll do the writing and take the photographs.  Max will be the icebreaker.  Together, we’ll have a wild ride!

Wow, you remind me so much of my mother, it’s uncanny. She has a red male standard poodle and has always talked about wanting to be a gypsy. When I was younger, actually, we’d talk about the possibility that we do have gypsy blood, since my mother’s ancestors are from Romania. Anyway, I just stumbled across your blog while looking for some interesting blogs by Mainers. I loved The Art of Racing in the Rain also.

Thanks for your comment! I checked out your blog as well… good luck with your business. I just moved from Portland back to Deer Isle and I miss the city! Do you know about Hinckley Park in So Portland? It’s a fun place to take dogs and let them be safely off-leash.

Subscribe to the blog if you want to be notified of new posts. also, if you send me your mailing address, we’ll send you a postcard from the road.

I don’t remember if you subscribed or not. if so, you’ll get an email when I post new entries. My boy has been “de-nutted” as Cindy likes to say and is doing fine. He’s as rambunctious as ever! Leaping with all four feet off the ground in today’s new snow! Hard to keep him down! can’t wait to see you in your Portland in 2011! we should talk on the horn again soon. luvya, meanit… Mozelle

    Hi Maureen!

I just found your website after googling dog-friendly places in Deer Isle…we are here in Stonington for 2 weeks with our 2 labs, and I’d love to find some place to take them and let them run off the leash. Any suggestions? I’d love to hear them!

    Thanks in advance!
    -Sarah

Thanks so much for your kind and insightful writing from Silver City. We love to hear how folks see us, and what you find neat about our wonderful little part of the world!

You are so welcome! Silver City was one of the best parts of my entire trip. If I didn’t love living on the ocean so much, I can imagine living in Silver City. I hope to come back some time…
