It was a long, stressful day here in St. Augustine, but when I went to pick Max up at 6PM, he was awake and ready to go home. He looks like he was run over by a truck – which he WAS – but he ate his dinner, took his meds, and is resting here in our room.
I took a couple of photos of his wounds, and you can see them below. The vet told me on the phone that he had a really bad haircut, and my response was I don’t care! He’s ALIVE! I still feel that way, but…
He has The. Worst. Haircut. Of. His. LIFE! but it’s O-K. He heard my voice when I went in to get him, and started softly whining. Dr. Jones came out and said he must have heard me come in, because he had been totally quiet all afternoon!
Needless to say, I was shocked to see him when she finally brought him out. However, I was thrilled to see that he was interested in greeting another dog waiting to see the doc!
Dogs are such stoics – he may feel like he’s been run over by a truck, but he doesn’t make a peep. He’s walking slowly, but not limping.
I am feeling really grateful to have him back safe and (somewhat) sound. I hope in a day or two he will be almost back to his old self.

lucky, and way fucking smarter now. he’s always been a fast learner. now he knows why you want him on the leash, and he knows about roads, cars and trucks, better than many dogs ever will!

Let’s hope he learned from this one! once he’s on the mend, we are going to work on paying more attention to ME when I ask him to. If he was a cat… I’m thinking this would have cost him at least three of his nine lives. grateful to everyone for their love and well wishes. xoxo back atcha.

Fortunately, it will all heal and grow back… but he looks like the walking wounded. Even had that sort of shell shocked look when we got back from the vet. xoxo

Ohmygod. Maureen!! Oh, this was way too close a call! I can only imagine the horror of seeing our beloved pooch Max on a collision course. What luck indeed that it wasn’t worse. Do they have tests for concussions in dogs?

Thanks Diana. I’m keeping a close eye on his behavior, and he is pretty perky this morning. Aside from looking like hell, he is as alert and curious – and mobile – as pre-accident. I’m happy we saw you too. And glad it wasn’t any worse. xoxo

Holy smoke! Poor Max. Glad he is ok and hope this has been a learning experience for him. It is said that good judgement derives from experience and experience often derives from poor judgement. Anyway, I hope this will turn out to be the most stressful part of your journey.

As I scrolled down & began looking at poor Max’s stitches, I said, “poor baby” & then saw you’d typed that below. Always such a scare. Years ago our miniature poodle (a very fast runner) ran into the street & needed stitches. The vet (in CT- a very caring person) said, “I don’t think he’ll have a scar.” It was the last thing on my mind. Its wonderful Max survived! What a stressful time you’ve had, Love to you both. -Karen F.
Thanks Karen. Yep, a scar or scars are the least of my concerns. I am so grateful that he’s alive, I wouldn’t even care if he ended up with white hair where he was injured! it would be a good reminder of our close call. love to you too.

Thank you for sharing Lucky’s experience! I’m not sure how long ago this happened, but I came across your article while searching for similar situations… my blue heeler was hit head-on 2 nights ago & I didn’t think she was going to make it, so I started searching Internet for success stories & 2 days later this is the first one I’ve found! The pictures are graphic but very helpful to compare… so far my girl is recovering great! Nothing broken or bleeding, just lots of swelling & road rash… best wishes to Lucky!
Hi Missy. This happened in February of 2012. Lucky isn’t his name – I was referring to him being a lucky dog! he is Max. He recovered fully, and as far as I can tell no scars or anything. I hope your girl heals completely. It is the scariest thing that can happen. I will tell you that it took him about 10 days or so to feel well enough to get up on the bed, or not need a little assistance into the car. We will send lots of loving thoughts your way for you and your girl.
